Agronomic analysis of soil in laboratory
The selected organisation: Valsts augu aizsardzības dienests
Short description:
Every farmer is interested in obtaining high and high quality harvests. In order to achieve this objective, correct, economically and agronomically justified fertilising needs to be carried out, which cannot be provided without knowledge of agronomic soil performance. Information on the agrochemical characteristics of the soil may be obtained by submitting the soil samples taken themselves for testing in an accredited laboratory.
The Agrochemical laboratory of the State Plant Protection Service has been accredited since 2003 and shall perform physical-chemical soil testing in accordance with the requirements of standard LVS EN ISO/IEC 17025.
The following agrochemical key soil indicators can be identified in the laboratory: reaction (pH), organic matter, mobile phosphorus (P2O5) and potassium (K2O) content. In some cases, in order to assess the soil's suitability for the cultivation of certain crops, it is desirable to also determine the soil content of secondary and trace elements: exchange magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca), moving sulphur (S-SO4), boron (B), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), etc.

1. solis / Service requests
In person
• a customer takes a soil sample and delivers it to the Agrochemistry Laboratory of the State Plant Protection Service

Sampling requirements:
• the sample shall be taken from a homogeneous soil, i.e. the soil must not be combined with a different granulometric composition (e.g. sand and clay), with different organic matter content, as well as from different soil types (e.g. sod carbonate and pooled soils).
• if the soil is homogeneous, the maximum area from which the sample can be taken shall be up to 6 ha
• take the sample by going diagonally along the length of the field and by carrying out 15-20 zoning or digging with a shovel at a depth of 20 cm. Place the soil taken in individual zones or digs in a bucket, thoroughly mix and produce one average sample (approximately 1 kg)
• place the sample in a clean plastic or fabric bag
• if more than one sample is sent for analysis, it shall be numbered or otherwise identified
• the sample must not be taken in a freshly calcified or fertilised field (it may be done no sooner than one month after kayaking or fertilising)
• the sample is not valid if lime, fertilizer or manure enters it
• if N/NH4 and N/NO3 are to be determined, place the bag containing the sample in a cold box and transported to the laboratory
